Doris was my granny.
She taught me how to knit, but not just to knit; she taught me about tenacity, independence and strength.
This brave and adventurous woman emigrated to Canada from the UK. Today, this might not seem like a big deal, but in 1977, for a single woman, widowed without a driver’s license or formal education, this was pretty darn ambitious.
Now, Doris had learned a thing or two about perseverance, having contributed to the war effort as a corporal mentioned in Despatches, London, England during WWII.
Undaunted by obstacles such as being unsuccessful in securing work with the feds, Doris and her friend Doreen called themselves “Gert & Daisy” and rolled up their sleeves to clean the homes of the well-to-do.
In the late 70s, Kanata, particularly Beaverbrook, was a small but up-and-coming, affluent community. Doris seized the opportunity and formalized the business as Kanata Domestic Services.
Doris left her mark in several ways! I knit with her needles, passion and I am embarking on a business with the same vigour.
Introducing Kanata Domestic Services 2.O:
Doris Domestic Knits
Knitting is a domestic handicraft. I knit English style. I knit with love in every stitch. I love to create original designs made from local fibre artists, vintage yarns and thrift shop finds to make truly unique products.
